Most taxpayers experience government through websites of widely varying quality (at best). Government technology procurement often defaults to slow, expensive, and insecure JavaScript frameworks. This results in terrible websites and leaves taxpayers on the hook for excessive maintenance costs.
In this talk, I explain the technology choices that inevitably lead to replacing something we just built—and the one requirement that goes a long way to fixing it.
From 2025-2026, I led the development of the IRS' new Tax Withholding Estimator, an interactive online tax estimator built with the Fact Graph, the modular tax engine from Direct File.
